A lot of people are identifying themselves as anti gay and lesbian as the violence against them climbs up.
National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, a group that supports victims of anti-LGBT harassment published a report which proved this. Hate crimes against gay members of the society have climbed up and gone up by 13% from 2009 to 2010.
Also the number of murders of gay and LGBT were 27; the offenders of such crimes are whites, strangers and non transgender men. Suzanna Walters, professor at Indiana University says "These positive changes are very real, there is no doubt about it, but the more visible you are as a community the more vulnerable you are, too. There is a protection in the closet when one is gay, as awful as that is. Real homophobia with violent outcomes is not a thing of the past and there is much more work to be done when it comes to crimes against gay members."
